Ah yes, it’s that time of year again that music fans have all been waiting for: Grammy nomination time:)
On December 6, the nominations for the 56th annual Grammy’s were announced and for the most part, there were not many surprises in terms of the nominees.
Mr. Magna Carta himself Jay-Z was the top runner with nine nominations for his LP Magna Carta Holy Grail , released on July 4. According to Grammy.com, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams each garnered seven nods.
It’s been quite a year for hip hop and the Grammy list further confirms the genre’s world wide appeal. For a while I as well as many others thought the 30+ year old urban art form had seriously deteriorated to a point where it was eternally damaged and that there was no one who could seriously resurrect the genre and give us a glimpse of what the music was like back in the late 80s and early to mid 90s. But all I can say is a kid from Compton broke loose and turned the rap game on its head. And we could do nothing but sing his praises. Kendrick Lamar has been called raps savior and for the most part I can’t blame them for giving him that title. He is one of the leading hip hop artists right now is garnering much success, mainly due to his smooth, raspy lyrical flow and honest, at times gritty portrayal of life growing up on the streets of L.A.
If any award he is definitely entitled to, its Best New Artist, and let’s just hope the Grammy’s acknowledge his brilliant talent, hard work ethic as well as the critical reception his album Good Kid M.A.A.D city garnered from numerous media outlets.
Kendrick will have some tough competition in this category, especially from fellow hip hop artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who have also made quite a huge impact on music this year with their smash hits “Thrift Shop” and “Same Love.” They also earned seven nominations, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
I have a feeling that a lot of artists who deserve the win will be once again get snubbed. We have seen this happen one too many times. One in particular that I remember is when Maroon 5 beat out Kanye West for best new artist.
We can only hope that Kendrick takes home at least two golden statues this year. It would definitely be a pleasant surprise if hip hop does reign at next year’s Grammys and get people talking like they did in 1984 when Michael Jackson took home eight Grammy’s for Thriller.
But, we can only hope.
The Grammy Awards will air live on January 26, 2014.
