Black History Month series: Women in Jazz Part II

For the last few years, I have done a monthly series for Black History Month that focuses on musicians from different genres like blues and jazz or that is centered on themes such as protest music. A few years ago, my series was on women in jazz. You may have also seen other posts regarding female jazz musicians on my blog. But there is a method to my madness. There has rarely been a major focus on female jazz musicians (excluding vocalists) within the mainstream jazz community. Yes, there are plenty of female musicians doing their thing on the music front, and are continuing to set trends with their unique style. However, their voices need to be expanded beyond local recognition.

I have decided to do a continuation of the Women in Jazz BHM series from 2013 by featuring a few more female musicians that were and still are trailblazers in the genre and for women instrumentalists.

Check out the trailer from the Girls in the Band documentary, which debuted in 2013.
